BRIEF: To create a working vegetable garden complete with greenhouse, bringing an old walled garden back into functional use. The garden should respond to the period nature of the Manor and the existing walled enclosure.
DESIGN RESPONSE: Using materials that responded to the house and the existing walls of the garden, a series of raised timber beds were designed to allow simple rotation of crops and also allowed more appropriate terracing of the sloping site. A number of these beds contain permanent planting and act as ‘cutting beds’ providing flowers suitable for the house. Breedon amber gravel was chosen to give a functional surface around the beds whilst contrasting with the brick work to give a clean finished look.
